SUPERBIKES TO JOIN THEIR 4-WHEELED RACING COUNTERPARTS IN 2019
The South African motorcycle championship will take on a different look in 2019 when the 1000cc and 600cc motorcycles join the three of the country’s premier car categories in an eight-event series at circuits around the country. In addition to the bike categories, the events will feature Global Touring Cars, Falken Polo Cup and the Investchem Formula 1600s. This will give spectators a full day of both two- and four-wheeled action featuring the best riders and drivers in South Africa.
The championship will be decided over eight rounds with two heats at each round. Dezzi Raceway, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, will host the opening round on 2 March with round 2 scheduled for Zwartkops five weeks later on 6 April. The teams will then head to Cape Town for the third round at Killarney Raceway on 11 May. The series then moves up the coast for the fourth round, which will take place at Aldo Scribante on 15 June, before returning inland to tackle Zwartkops for the second time 27 July. It is back to the coast for round six, this time down to East London and the renowned Grand Prix Circuit where the legendary Potter’s Pass and Rifle Range are waiting to test the riders on 31 August. September 28 sees the riders making their second visit to Killarney for the penultimate round, before returning inland for the season finale, which takes place at Red Star Raceway on 26 October.
Commenting on the new arrangement, series organizer Brad Anassis said, “It is going to be great having the bikes and cars back under the same umbrella. Spectators have indicated that they want to see the best of South African circuit racing in a single series and this is what we will be giving them.”
